Belonging to Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, Bai Dinh Ninh Binh Pagoda is located at the western gateway of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu in the past.

The pagoda is located peacefully on the slopes of Bai Dinh mountain, surrounded by vast valleys, lakes, rippling lagoons and limestone mountains.

Bai Dinh Pagoda has existed for more than 1,000 years in this ancient capital, associated with three major feudal dynasties of our country in the previous period, including the Dinh Dynasty, the Early Le Dynasty and the Ly Dynasty. The pagoda was built in 1136 by Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong.

Around the pagoda, there are countless beautiful and spiritually meaningful architectural works such as the Jade Well, the Patriarch’s Cave, the Buddha’s Cave, the Mother Goddess’s Cave, and the Saint Cao Son’s Altar.

The pagoda is a place associated with old anecdotes and stories about Zen Master Nguyen Minh Khong, who was famous throughout the South in the past. He was the monk who laid the foundation for Buddhism, at the same time built the Buddha statue and opened the Buddha land in this place.

Legend has it that during the Ly dynasty, Saint Nguyen Minh Khong went to Bai Dinh mountain to find medicine to cure the king’s illness. He realized that this was a fairyland, with mountains facing west as if facing Buddha’s land.

In addition, the mountains and forests here also have countless precious medicinal plants, so he decided to stop and build a pagoda here. The reason the pagoda was named Bai Dinh is because, according to ancient beliefs, Bai means worshiping, worshiping the land, immortals and Buddhas. Meanwhile, Dinh means peak, located in a high place.

Therefore, Bai Dinh means worshiping heaven and earth, the Immortals and Buddhas residing above. In addition, the pagoda’s name also has the meaning of pointing towards Mount Dinh – a mountain associated with heroic events of previous Vietnamese history.

Even though time has passed, this land has witnessed many ups and downs in the country’s history. Bai Dinh Pagoda still stands majestically despite the wind and dust. As the largest pagoda in our country, Bai Dinh Ninh Binh Pagoda has an area of up to 539 hectares.

In which the new Bai Dinh pagoda area is 80 hectares wide and the old pagoda area is 27 hectares wide and other works. The overall architecture of Bai Dinh Pagoda today is considered a standard and standard measure for ancient pagoda architecture in Vietnam.

The new Bai Dinh Pagoda now has a larger scale with many famous architectural works. Such as Three Gate Gate, Bell Tower, Quan Am Palace, Phap Chu Palace, Tam The Palace, Stupa, Arhat Corridor.

At the same time, the pagoda is also the place that holds many current records such as: the pagoda has the largest gold-plated bronze Buddha statue in Asia. The pagoda has the largest bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha in Southeast Asia, and the pagoda has the largest bronze bell in Vietnam.

The pagoda has the tallest stupa in Asia, the largest pagoda area in Vietnam, and the longest Arhat corridor in Asia. ATTRACTIONS AT THE TEMPLE. Bright Cave, Dark Cave are the top attractions at the pagoda – a wonderful gift that nature has bestowed on this place.

Visitors will pass about 300 stone steps to reach the ancient Bai Dinh pagoda area. Bright Cave worships Buddha and Gods, Dark Cave worships Mother Goddesses and Fairies. Coming to this place, visitors will be able to sit on a boat and admire the captivatingly beautiful stalactites.

Besides, visitors can also be introduced to the romantic ancient capital of Hoa Lu. The temple worships God Cao Son – the god in charge of the Vu Lam mountain region, who once assisted the Le Duong army in destroying Uy Muc.

Legend has it that God Cao Son was one of the 50 children who followed Lac Long Quan to reclaim the mountains. The Cao Son temple was built with its back against the mountain, with a corridor separating it from the valley in front.

Bell Tower – Coming to Bai Dinh Pagoda during your trip to Ninh Binh, you absolutely do not miss the Bell Tower. This architectural work is 22m high and 17m in diameter. The Bell Tower impresses with its octagonal architecture with 3 curved roofs.

Inside the Bell Tower there is an extremely meticulously carved bronze bell. With a weight of about 36 tons and nearly 7 meters high, this bronze bell holds the record as the largest bronze bell in Vietnam.

Ngoc Well is located right at the foot of Bai Dinh Pagoda mountain, appearing prominently with an extremely unique design. This is also the pagoda with the largest well among pagodas in Vietnam. The well has a depth of 6m and a diameter of the well surface of 30m.

Coming here during your trip to Ninh Binh, you will have the opportunity to admire the cool, clear blue water. Legend has it that Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong drew water from this well to cure King Ly Than Tong.

Bai Dinh Pagoda Ninh Binh has long been famous for its Stupa bearing the glorious mark of the Ly Dynasty Buddhist period. The tower is decorated with many impressive patterns and motifs such as lotus petals, clouds, and bodhi leaves. In particular, the entire tower is made from terracotta bricks from Bat Trang pottery village.

The stupa is considered a typical symbol representing the cultural life of Vietnamese people. When entering the tower, you will be surprised by the extremely sacred but equally splendid space. In the main hall of the tower, the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is placed respectfully on the three-step altar, showing the solemnity of this place.

This architectural work stands out with 13 floors and a height of about 100m. This is the place to display Buddha relics transferred from India. The ticket price to visit inside is 50,000 VND/person/turn (if you do not initially buy a package ticket of 220,000 VND).

Ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda area – Bai Dinh Pagoda is a project built in the architectural style of the Ly Dynasty. To reach this area, visitors need to climb 300 stone steps. After that, you will come across a slope that leads to the location of the ancient pagoda.

Looking to the right, you can easily see Sang Cave – a place to worship Gods and Buddha. On the left side of the main temple area are the temples of Mother Goddesses and Fairies.

Going deep into the dark cave of ancient Bai Dinh, visitors can admire the 7 chambers inside the cave, located deep in the cave. The highlight of the cave is that they are all connected by many cliffs.

Inside the cave, visitors can visit Ngoc well, which is famous for being formed from cold water droplets falling from the ceiling of the cave. Continuing your journey, go to Toi cave to worship Saint Mother Lieu Hanh – who is both a saint and a benefactor.

The Mother Goddess Cave has 7 small interconnected caves. In the middle of the cave there is “one pillar of the sky” created from hanging stalactites. Furthermore, the cave also emits magical sounds like a symphony from a stone organ.

Temple of Saint Nguyen – Inside the Bai Dinh pagoda complex, there is a temple with a structure in the first and later style. This is the place to worship Zen master – famous physician Nguyen Minh Khong to commemorate and remember his merits.

The Zen master was the one who accidentally discovered a beautiful cave and built a temple to worship Buddha. In addition, he is also a famous physician who cures diseases and saves people. Not only that, he also researched and understood the origins of Dong Son civilization in ancient Vietnamese times.

The aim is to restore the lost traditional craft of bronze casting. To express your wishes and desires, go to the temple’s Phap Chu Palace to express them to Buddha. In front of the palace is an airy campus with a lake to release animals right in the middle, you can come and visit.

The statue of Shakyamuni sits on a lotus throne and recites the lotus flower. His face has a gentle look, his mouth has a smile of salvation, his ears are big and long, his nose is straight and regular, and his hair has spiral bumps on his head.

He wears a robe, a symbol of calming the mind so that wisdom can arise to eliminate: greed, anger, ignorance, love, hate, joy, and anger. His eyes always looked down to illuminate his inner self. In the middle of his chest is the word “ten thousand”, representing Buddha’s merit, compassion and immeasurable wisdom.

The right hand holds the lotus bud, raised almost to head level, with the thumb and middle finger supporting the lotus stem. Left hand placed palm up on right leg in front of abdomen. Legs are crossed, revealing only one right foot to protect against evil spirits. This posture is called the Hoa Nien statue.

The lotus flower is made up of 3 layers of lotus petals. The two upper layers overlap each other: the upper layer has small lotus petals, the lower layer has staggered large lotus petals. The third layer, almost symmetrical with large lotus petals on top, is a row of drooping lotus petals.

Imagine that Buddha’s compassion is protecting all living beings who have learned to take refuge and repent. Behind the Buddha is a stylized bas-relief of a gilded bronze Bodhi leaf with hundreds of small bronze Buddha statues.

Represents the boundless transformation and existence of Buddha Dharma according to the concept that “in this Saha world there is no place without Buddhaland”.

This statue was awarded the certificate “Confirming the record for the tallest and heaviest bronze Shakyamuni Buddha statue in Vietnam” by the Vietnam Record Book Center on May 4, 2006. Tam The Palace – A place not to be missed pass when coming to Bai Dinh tour.

This is a tall, wide, massive building, the best in the Bai Dinh pagoda area. There is no other type of pagoda architecture in our country that is as beautiful, magnificent, and majestic as the one here.

From the yard, there are two paths to Tam The temple of Bai Dinh pagoda, including 32 stone steps. Between the two entrances, there is also a square stone relief 10m each way, with an area of 100m2, assembled with many stone slabs with a thickness of 0.2m.

On the four corners of the stone relief, the top is carved with two phoenixes, the bottom right is carved with a turtle. On the left side is carved a glass, in the middle is a wide moon face carved with a winding dragon inside.

This large stone relief is carved with four sacred animals (dragon, lyre, tortoise, phoenix). The corners of the roof of Tam The Palace all have curved roofs like the shape of a phoenix’s tail, making the roof curve.

Flexible and harmonious like tidal waves, like a boat floating on the water, like two bird wings spreading out to fly.

This line has been seen engraved on the surface of the Dong Son bronze drum. It is also the line of square and round, of heaven and earth, symbolizing the harmony of yin and yang. Speaks to the aspirations and soul of Vietnamese people, expressing the profound Eastern philosophy of life.

In Tam The Palace, there are 3 monolithic bronze statues of Tam The, each 7.2m high, weighing 50 tons, all gilded with gold. Placed on three 1.5 m high pedestals, covered with ruler stones carved with very imposing planting patterns.

The Vietnam Record Book Center issued the certificate “Confirming the record for the Pagoda with the largest bronze statue of Tam The in Vietnam”, on December 12, 2007. The largest Arhat corridor in Vietnam of Bai Dinh Pagoda. Along the corridor are placed 500 stone Arhats.

This is considered a large number because no temple in Vietnam has placed so many Arhats. From the Tam Quan wooden house along the east and west directions to Ta Vu and Huu Vu, each side has 117 corridors.

These Arhat corridors are all built of wood, following the architecture of a stack of beds, front then back. The roofing material is glazed tiles taken from Bat Trang pottery village.

Since ancient times, Bat Trang pottery village has been famous for the art of making ceramics, ceramic tiles, and tiles with sophisticated and diverse patterns. Next is the column and truss architecture in the Arhat corridor. All column and truss systems at Bai Dinh Pagoda are made of Tu Thiet wood with relatively large sizes.

Each with a diameter of up to 0.4m, were transported directly from Tu Thiet to Bai Dinh pagoda during the construction process. It is one of the famous tourist attractions in Ninh Binh, and is also a spiritual relic of great significance. So you should note these things if you intend to visit the temple:

-You should wear sports shoes for convenience in moving. -Choose appropriate, comfortable, polite clothing. -You can bring change to donate and pray for good luck for your family, yourself and friends. -Bring an umbrella if you go in early spring, because at this time the weather is often drizzly.

-There are places selling water and snacks available in the temple, so visitors do not need to bring too much to avoid difficulty moving. -Always throw trash in the right place and maintain general hygiene. -Keep the silence. Bai Dinh Pagoda is one of the spiritual relics favored by many people in Ninh Binh.

Not only is it a place associated with old stories about the early days of Buddhism being introduced to our country. The pagoda also possesses countless meaningful works, with majestic and poetic scenery. If you have the opportunity to return to Ninh Binh, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Bai Dinh Pagoda.
