13 Years, 33,910 Officers: How Japan’s Cold Case Was Finally Solved
On the last night of January 2004, a university student in Ami, Ibaraki, went out and never came home. Police later said her glasses, phone and wallet were still in her room. For thirteen years and eight months, tens of thousands of officers chased one case. We follow it from a note on a table and a bicycle found in the wrong city, through years of dead ends and a DNA profile that finally matched, to an arrest in Gifu, two court rulings, and one man who is still wanted. Told with respect for the victim and her family: no graphic detail, and names of minors are left out.
